Everyone wants to grow on Instagram, but no one seems to know the value of growth without ads. Growing organically ensures that the account reaches the right target audience and relevant followers come to your account.

 

Before moving on to ways to grow on Instagram without ads, let’s learn ‘what is the Instagram algorithm?

 

How Does the Instagram Algorithm Work?

The working logic of the Instagram algorithm is actually similar to other search engines. 

By measuring according to the level of interest and curiosity;

  • Which content you are interested in,
  • The ones you find worth watching,
  • That you read the information he gave,
  • The ones you saved in case I need them later,
  • And it works based on the content you send to the users you interact with.

 

The algorithm analyzes the accounts you interact with and shows the content it thinks you like in the discover feed. Therefore, it will be useful to interact with accounts from your niche while producing content on Instagram.

Instagram Tips to Increase Engagement

Our goal is to grow on Instagram without ads! 

Our priority is to optimize the Instagram account and apply the tips I recommend below while sharing. 

 

1. Using Keywords in the Name 

Keyword usage is very valuable on Instagram, just like on Google. As a result of queries typed into the Instagram search bar, you can get more people to discover your business account.

2. Create a Biography that Attracts Followers

It’s often not easy for people to discover your account or scroll through your content. And even if they do, you need to give them a reason to stay on your profile. This is very important, did you get their attention?

 

Because you only have 3 seconds to impress them! Isn’t that a very short time? Yes, it is, and it’s getting shorter by the day. That’s why you should optimize your Instagram bio to keep the users who come to your profile by chance and convince them to follow you.

 

While doing this;

  • Who you are (business, brand, personal account)
  • What benefit do you provide?
  • If you have a product/service, what is it?
  • Which category do you serve in? 
  • How should they get in touch? You need to answer questions like.

3. SEO in Caption

When sharing content on Instagram, the ‘description’ section, where text or emoji is left, is one of the most effective areas where you can increase your chances of getting in front of your target audience!

 

For example, as a digital marketer, I produce content about ‘SEO, social media and content creation’ on my Instagram account. 

In order to reach the target audience and increase my potential clientele, I create informative or entertaining content from time to time and use words ‘relevant to my niche’ in the description section. 

 

*There are many target keywords I can count such as digital marketing, social media management, SEO consultancy, target audience, hook title, CTA, trending music.

4. Correct Hashtag Usage 

Hashtags are still effective today, although not as much as they used to be. 

To get the expected efficiency from hashtags, you need to use ‘content-related tags’. Among the things that have changed compared to the past;

 

  • Overdoing the use of hashtags can create spam. To prevent this, it will be sufficient to use between 3-5 tags.
  • The algorithm attaches importance to the correct use of hashtags. Hashtags added just for interaction, independent of content, can create spam.
  • Banned hashtags such as #fyp does not make it fall into discovery as it is thought!!!

On the contrary, since it is banned, it can cause situations such as being banned from the algorithm, irrelevant interaction and bot accounts.

 

What are Banned Hashtags?

As the name suggests, banned hashtags are tags that are not recommended for use. The number of known banned hashtags is 114,000.

If you want your content to fall in front of the right people and increase your potential customers/clients, you should pay attention to the use of hashtags.

5. Sharing on All Formats

The most used format to provide interaction on Instagram is usually reels videos. Yes, reels content makes a great contribution to interaction, but it is not enough alone!!!

 

In addition to reels content, single post and carousel post sharing is also necessary.

Reels content extends the screen time of users because it is watchable, but if the posts are used correctly, it makes it much easier to reach the potential target audience. How? By using keywords of course!

 

When sharing a post, go to the ‘advanced settings’ option at the bottom of the screen and then click on the field that says ‘write alternative text’.

The words you should write in this field should be informative expressions about your content.

6. Active Use of Stories

Stories are one of the Instagram content formats. The reason why I keep them separate from the top section is that they play a big role in terms of ‘referral to sales’!!!

 

While working to reach potential target audience with other content types, you can increase sales by using stories! 

 

To calculate the success rate of stories;

‘If at least 9-10% of your followers see your stories, your stories are getting good engagement! You need to share at least 1-3 stories a day and communicate sincerely with your followers ‘in your own language’.

7. Interaction with Competitors

You can increase your own engagement by engaging with competitors! How?

 

If you like competitors’ posts and leave ‘meaningful comments’, they will reply to you. If your comment makes sense and supports the general opinion, different people will also like your comment and it will appear at the top of the comments on related posts/reels. With this tactic alone, you can attract potential followers of your competitors to your profile. 

 

As a Ceren Yilmaz proverb says: “If you want engagement, you have to give engagement!”.

 

8. Before and After Sharing

One of the biggest mistakes of those who produce content on Instagram is to share the content and then leave the application, which is something that the algorithm never likes!

 

Because Instagram, just like other platforms, gives importance to the activity in the application. So when you are going to share;

  • Browse instagram before sharing. Interact with content relevant to your niche. You may even discover new ideas and strategies while doing so.
  • Make your post.
  • Afterwards, take care to interact and stay active again.

 

9. Working with UGC and Influencers

Another method to achieve ad-free growth will of course be the support of ‘community builders’. One of the only things marketing teaches us:

The potential customer wants to see results! How is the satisfaction? What are the benefits? That’s why many big brands collaborate with well-known influencers to promote their products.

 

At this point, UGC Content Creators have become more preferred instead of old influencers. Because the UGC creates a more sincere and sincere profile for users by creating the perception of ‘one of us’ in people.

Instagram Creator Marketplace was first tested and launched in the United States in 2022. Recently, Instagram announced the expansion of its Creator Marketplace, bringing together brands and content creators, to eight more countries.

These new markets include Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Japan, India, and Brazil. 

 

With Instagram’s new marketplace, which integrates brands with advertising partners and individuals receiving advertising payments, the influencer marketing process is being brought into its own structure: 

Individuals will no longer need to message brands or rely on influencer agencies.

 

Last year, Instagram activated the API feature for communicating and structuring briefs with content creators, inviting brands/agencies interested in collaborations to use the platform. 

 

Brands and content creators using the platform will be able to communicate with each other to collaborate on paid partnerships, allowing advertisers to use organic content as advertisements.

 

We expect the platform, currently available in the US and 8 other countries, to arrive in our country soon. Once it becomes available and you join the marketplace, you will be able to:

 

Features of the Content Creator Marketplace: 

  • You’ll be able to view content opportunities from brands and reach out to the brands you’re interested in. 
  • You can list your favorite brands, allowing brands to see that you’re interested in collaborating with them.

I can say that the platform, which opens the door to professional collaborations for content creators, will be a continuation of organically produced content and the era of nano influencers.

Note: All branded content must be clearly labeled with a paid partnership tag in Feed, Stories, Live, and Reels videos. In content involving collaborations, the #ad and #collaboration hashtags should always be used.

Instagram has rapidly grown into a prominent social media platform in recent years, making it an effective advertising space for various businesses. Instagram ads serve as a powerful marketing tool to introduce your products or services to a wider audience and attract potential customers.

 

How to Advertise on Instagram?

There are two different methods for advertising on Instagram: through the Facebook Business Manager and directly through the Instagram app.

 

Facebook Business Manager

The Facebook Ad Manager is an effective tool for managing Instagram ads. As Facebook and Instagram are managed by the same company, advertisers can use the Facebook Ad Manager to place Instagram ads.

The Facebook Ad Manager offers various targeting options to ensure ads reach the intended audience. This allows for personalized advertisements to be shown to Instagram users.

Additionally, through the Facebook Business Manager, you can set the ad budget and duration, monitor campaigns, and view performance reports.

To advertise through the Facebook Ad Manager:

  • Open and sign in to the Facebook Ad Manager.
  • Define your primary objective, such as brand awareness, traffic, reach, engagement, app installations, video views, potential customer acquisition, and conversion.

After setting the objective, name your Instagram ad campaign and activate split testing to evaluate the effectiveness of your ad strategies.

I recommend enabling Campaign Budget Optimization. This feature allows you to allocate a budget for the entire campaign or a specific duration.

The daily budget option allows Instagram to spend up to your specified daily spending limit. This option is ideal for brands with fluctuating budgets throughout the campaign.

On the other hand, the lifetime budget option allows you to set a specific end date for the campaign. Instagram can only spend during this defined period.

For first-time advertisers, choosing the “Lowest Cost” option may be sensible since you may not have enough data to refine your bidding strategy. This option prevents overspending or underspending.

Leave Ad Scheduling and Placement settings as they are, and customize them later if desired. After configuring everything, click on “Create Ad Account” and specify the country, currency, and time zone for your ad campaign. The application will then direct you to the Ad Set section for the next steps.

 

  • Define your target audience.

Properly identifying the target audience for your advertising allows your ads to reach relevant individuals and enables you to connect with your potential target audience.

 

  • Place your ads.

 If you are going to advertise on Facebook and Instagram, you can allow the ad manager to set up placements by selecting ‘Automatic Placements.’ However, if you are advertising only on Instagram, you can remove the other platform through the ‘Edit Placements’ option.

 

  • Create your Instagram ads. 

The most enjoyable stage of the advertising process is creating your ads. At this stage, you need to decide whether you want to promote an existing post or create a new one.

If you want to use an existing post for promotional purposes, choose one from your feed, preview the ad, and make sure to add an appropriate call-to-action (CTA) button.

To create a completely new Instagram ad, select a format – you can choose from Carousel ads, Single Image or Video ads, or Collection ads. To display the ad in both the Instagram feed and stories, you can upload a new media file for each placement. After adding the files, you can customize the appearance of the image or video.

In the Text and Links section, fill in the ad text and links. Afterward, you can preview the ad campaign by clicking on the ‘Review’ option to check the details before finalizing it.

Instagram ads typically consist of image or video content and can be displayed in the Explore section or the news feed, allowing brands to showcase their products or services to a broader audience and attract potential customers.

To sponsor an Instagram ad:

  •  You must have a business profile.
  •  Select the post you want to advertise.

 After choosing the post, check the ‘Promote’ option at the bottom right.

 

  • Define your ad objective.

When advertising on the Instagram application, you are presented with two options for selecting a target audience: automatic target audience and creating your own target audience.

The automatic option allows the application to analyze your followers and reach users with similar profiles/preferences. Alternatively, if you want more control over your target audience, you can create your own custom target audience.

 

  • Set Budget and Campaign Duration.

After defining your target audience, you need to choose your advertising budget and the number of days your ad will be displayed. If you are unsure about how much budget to allocate, you can click on the ‘Learn about budget, duration, and distribution’ section at the bottom to review recommended budgets.

Additionally, the Instagram application ensures that your ad does not exceed the set budget limit.

 

  • Publish Your Ad.

This is the section where you perform final checks before publishing your Instagram ad. You can review aspects such as the ad’s appearance, call-to-action phrases, and headlines.

Finally, after completing the payment, you can launch your ad.
